BIS in Northern Virginia
In Partnership with Northern Virginia
Community College

Earn a U.Va. degree without leaving Northern Virginia

The University of Virginia, in partnership with Northern Virginia Community College, offers an adult degree completion program exclusively for current and former NOVA students. The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) program is a part-time, but rigorous, undergraduate degree program with evening and weekend classes designed to meet the educational needs of the adult student.

This transfer program builds on students' previous college work and offers liberal arts courses that promote critical thinking and analytical skills.   Dedicated faculty, individual advising and small classes provide a small college experience within a large university.

What's new?

  • BIS will offer both fall and spring admission for its NOVA program.  The application deadline for spring 2009 enrollment is November 1.
  • BIS now offers intensive two-week courses in January and in May in Charlottesville and at Tidewater Community College.  We look forward to expanding these opportunities to the Northern Virginia location soon. You will be able to supplement your fall, spring, and summer course work with these highly intensive courses.

Qualifications

Students applying to the U.Va. BIS degree program must:

  • Have 60 semester credits of transferable college course work (at least 15 transferable credits from NOVA) with a grade of C or better from one or more regionally accredited colleges or universities;
  • Be in good standing with a minimum 2.0 GPA from their most recently attended college;
  • Be at least four years past high school graduation or equivalency;
  • Have no previous degree from a four-year institution;
  • Have transferable course work that satisfies area requirements in English composition, humanities, social sciences, and math/natural sciences;
  • Complete the BIS Application, which includes three essay responses;
  • Provide official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities;
  • Schedule an admission interview with a BIS staff member.
