  • High school graduation at least four years prior to enrolling in BIS.

  • 60 hours of transferable college-level work with a grade of 2.0 or better from one or more regionally accredited colleges or universities, including any required prerequisites for the concentration.  Courses presented by applicants must be eligible for transfer to the University of Virginia.  Some examples of courses that normally transfer to UVa may be found in the University of Virginia Transfer Guide for the Virginia Community College System

  • Within the 60 hours that students bring to their application, 30 credit hours must satisfy the requirements of the Liberal Studies Core.  Courses presented for the Liberal Studies Core generally must be eligible to satisfy an area requirement of the University of Virginia College of Arts and Sciences.  Details about area requirements can be found at The University of Virginia Undergraduate Record.

    • 6 credit hours of English composition
    • 6 credit hours of humanities
    • 6 credit hours of social sciences
    • 12 credit hours of mathematics and/or natural science

  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 from the institution they attended most recently and be in good academic and social standing at that institution.

  • Applicants must be in good financial standing at the University of Virginia.

  • While the BIS program does not have a formal computer competency requirement, all students have the responsibility to gain the computer skills needed to perform well in any BIS course.  Those skills include the following: e-mail; word processing; use of the Internet, especially for academic research; use of Excel and PowerPoint in some courses (these expectations will be noted on specific course syllabi). BIS Staff can provide suggestions for course work that can help strengthen these computer skills prior to applying to the program.  Access to a high-speed Internet connection is strongly recommended and will optimize access to the U.Va. web learning tools including electronic course materials, the U.Va. libraries, and Blackboard and UVaCollab.                                                          .
