Student Advising
Student’s Responsibility in the Advising Relationship
The advising relationship is a partnership between the student and the faculty
advisor. In order for the advising process to be effective, both the student and
the advisor have to understand and take responsibility for their respective
roles. These roles should be discussed and clarified at the
first meeting.
The student’s responsibilities generally include:
Scheduling pre-registration meetings. It is your responsibility to
initiate contact with your faculty advisor (usually via e-mail) to set up
a pre-registration meeting. Some advisors may choose to make initial
pre-registration contact. Others may not. In either case, the responsibility for
making sure that this meeting happens ultimately rests with you.
Being prepared to discuss
academic progress. You should understand the requirements for graduation and
know what requirements you still need to meet. Your advisor can help you figure
this out if you’re unsure, but it’s your responsibility to monitor your own
progress and make sure you’re on track.
Planning your degree.
Before you meet with your advisor, you should have a tentative academic plan for
the next few semesters. This is a starting point for your discussion with your
advisor. How will you meet your requirements? What courses are related to the Capstone
Project? When will you take the Proseminar?
Think about these longer-range issues before you meet with your advisor. Bring
along any notes, questions or relevant information.
Taking the initiative.
If you have a question or an academic concern, contact your advisor. Don’t wait
for your advisor to contact you.
Asking questions. Be
prepared to ask questions about anything that is unclear or about which you have
not been able to find answers on your own.
