Message from the Dean

Thomas Jefferson’s conceptions of education and democracy were intertwined. The great advantage of a democracy, compared to the aristocratic system of his age, was that it placed its trust in the hands of “the people”. Society would best flourish if all people of talent, whatever their station in life, could exercise their abilities for the common good — but Jefferson realized that democracy would be an empty promise if those talents were not matured through education.
