Senior citizens

In compliance with the Senior Citizen Higher Education Act, the University offers courses with tuition and certain fees waived for qualified senior citizens.

To enroll in graduate or undergraduate course for a grade and receive tuition free, you must be at least sixty years old and have been legally domiciled in Virginia for at least one year before the semester begins.  In addition, you must have had a taxable income from the preceding year not exceeding $15,000 for federal income tax purposes.  You will be asked to sign a certification statement to this effect.

To enroll in graduate or undergraduate course for audit (no grade) and receive tuition free, you must be at least sixty years old and have been legally domiciled in Virginia for at least one year before the semester begins.

In both cases, you will be required to follow the same procedures as paying students, including obtaining the instructor’s permission to enroll in the course.  Even if you pay no fee for the class, you still need to register for the course!

Once the above requirements have been satisfied, Community Scholar procedures will apply.  Please see sidebar on left for further details on what courses are available, how to enroll in a course, semester tuition and calendar, and more.
