NCFA 035 The Art of Watching Film
Course Description: What separates a great film from the ordinary? In this course, you will learn how to read a film and gain the critical viewing skills to move beyond simply seeing a movie. We’ll study the language of film and examine the tools and techniques that filmmakers use to create meaning in their work, including lighting, sound, symbolism, and perspective. Why are certain shots used? Why are scenes lit a certain way? Why are characters and objects in a particular arrangement? Lecture, class discussion, and film clips will be combined with analysis of several of the “great” films, including “Citizen Kane,” “Notorious,” “Grand Illusion,” “Singing in the Rain," and “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Films will be on reserve at Clemons Library. Group viewing may be arranged.
