Course Description: Centering on a broad view of management theories and principles this course establishes the foundation of further study in the Certificate program. Management is a rapidly changing blend of applied behavioral and social science and interpersonal artistry. This blend of science and artistry will introduce the student to the fundamental issues and skills of management. The major issues covered in this course will be what is commonly referred to as the “management functions": (1) Defining manager's roles (2) Planning (3) Organizing (4) Leading (5) Controlling (6) Delegating (7) Giving and Receiving Feedback and (8) Managing change. In learning these functions we’ll concentrate on covering the following topics: - Role of the Manager; - Evolution of Management Thought; - Managers Terrain including organizational culture, global environment and social responsibility; - Planning process with a focus on strategic planning and planning tools; - Organizational Design Concepts; - Leadership qualities, motivation of employees, communication skills and managing change; - Controlling the Management Process;
Prerequisites: HR 401 required for students in certificate prog.
