Legal & Ethical Issues in Human Resources

Course Description: The goal of the course is to introduce students to the major legal and ethical issues facing the human resources practitioner. The class will focus on such topics as discipline and wrongful discharge, disability, sexual harassment, and privacy rights. It will also examine the ethical issues of the modern workplace-conflicts involved with race and ethnicity, tensions between job demands and family responsibilities, the rights of the individual worker vs the prerogatives of the employer. The central objective is to provide students with the knowledge and techniques necessary for handling legal and ethical dilemmas in the human resources arena. It will teach the skills for analyzing legal conflicts between employer and employee and offer techniques for investigating them. Finally, students will learn methods for resolving such disputes and develop perspectives on emerging areas of contention.

Prerequisites: HR 401 required for students in certificate prog.
