Teaching Mathematics to Diverse Populations

Course Description: This course is a professional development opportunity designed to help the mathematics specialist facilitate best practices in his/her setting. The materials are sets of classroom episodes (cases) illustrating student thinking as described by their teachers. In addition to case discussions, the course offers teachers opportunities to explore mathematics in lessons led by facilitators; to modify those lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners; to learn more about state requirements (NCLB), laws and due process with regard to Individual Educational Plans; to become familiar with assessment issues; to use virtual manipulatives as a tool for instruction; and to read related research.
