Perennial Gardening

Course Description: Gardening with perennials has been popular since Gertrude Jekyll invented the English perennial border nearly a hundred years ago. Modern American gardeners have found ways to use these long-lived herbaceous plants in our more informal, less labor intensive landscapes, making perennials a staple ingredient of well displayed grounds. This course will introduce you to a wide variety of perennial plants suited to central Virginia through lectures, discussions, slide presentations and a field trip. Topics include using perennials as groundcovers; perennials for color, texture, fragrance and cut flowers; using perennials to create a meadow garden; blending and timing of colors; tricks for long-term display; ornamental grasses and bulbs; and special collections such as roses, daylilies, hostas and iris.
