Course Description: Explore the history of architecture in Virginia and gain an appreciation for the variety of styles represented in its unique buildings. We begin with an overview of American architectural styles (particularly Virginian), historic preservation, and how to determine a building’s age from its details, saw marks, brick bonds, nails, and construction. Subsequent classes will focus on Germanic architecture of the Shenandoah Valley and log buildings on the frontier; pre-Georgian architecture; Georgian public and domestic architecture; Federal architecture; and Jefferson’s master builders. Two full-day Saturday field trips will provide a unique hands-on experience. The class will visit historic areas and some of the finest plantations in Virginia not normally open to the public.
