Writing for Public Relations

Course Description: This course is designed to give students an introduction to the elements of the practice of public relations writing. It will be particularly useful for public relations professionals in the early stages of their careers and for individuals who do not currently practice public relations full time but are interested in the profession. The course will address public relations writing for broadcast and print media to include: news releases, style elements, media advisories, pitch letters, public service announcements, press conferences, brochure planning and writing, feature article writing, and others. The following writing topics will be covered in seven class meetings. -Introduction to PR writing for broadcast & print media. Each student will pick an organization or industry to represent. -Discussion of errors to avoid and the news release News release writing review Photography and Photo captions, Fact sheets, Crisis reaction statements. -Pitch Letters, Media Advisories, Op-Ed pieces, Press Conferences. -Speechwriting, Public Service Announcements. Press Kits Feature article writing, brochure planning and writing
