What the Fat Lady Sings: A Brief History of Opera

Course Description: Beginning with Monteverdi, “The father of opera,” and concluding with a look at twenty-first century composers, this entertaining opera history course will trace the birth and development of opera through the lens of its cultural settings. No knowledge of music history or composition is required. The atmosphere of the class will be lively and open; we will use a combination of lecture, discussion, music demonstrations and visual aids. Student participation and interpretation will be welcome. By the conclusion of this course, you will possess a greater understanding of both the styles and sound of the world of opera, giving you more confidence to forge forward, dig deeper and better enjoy the unique musical experience of opera.
