Understanding the Design of Interior Spaces

Course Description: In the first century B.C., Vitruvius wrote that good architecture is “a combination of strength, practicality and delight.” This small-group workshop will explore those issues as related to interior and exterior spaces—both period and modern, residential and non-residential. You will learn about the language of architecture, the major components of spatial analysis, and the determinants that shape good design concepts. The overall goal is to enable you to assess applied design in the world around you, deepening your appreciation for truly good architectural work wherever you find it. Selected buildings in Charlottesville and at the University of Virginia will serve as laboratory subjects.
