Early Southern Furniture and Material Arts

Course Description: This course is an exploration and celebration of early Southern furniture. We will study the development of furniture in the Chesapeake area, the low country and the back country of the South, with occasional forays into Southern fine art, folk art and objets d’art. What makes some furniture Southern? How is Southern furniture recognized by styles over time? What furniture forms are found nowhere else but in the South? What are some of the vernacular forms of otherwise usual furniture designs? And, what are the unique construction techniques of some Southern furniture? The course will include a primer on the language of early furniture, handouts on the various time periods and lists of highly recommended reference books. It will also include a field trip for a hands-on examination experience.
