Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture II

Course Description: This course is ideal for those who have obtained a basic knowledge of the Chinese language and hope to advance to the next level, as well as for those who want to deepen their understanding of the long evolution of Chinese culture. The classroom atmosphere will be relaxed and lively. We will begin with a review of basic characters and phrases and an introduction to Chinese culture. The subsequent language component of the course aims to help students enhance their Chinese language skills by learning how to function effectively in various social settings. Attention will be paid to developing communicative skills through speaking and writing. For the culture component, the class will practice Chinese calligraphy, read select chapters of famous Chinese classic novels translated into English by the instructor, and watch and discuss documentary films. These experiential activities will introduce students not to only the ancient period, but also to the modern changes to the rich Chinese cultural tradition.
