Introduction to Screenwriting

Course Description: This course will provide the fundamentals needed to write a commercial screenplay from identifying marketable story ideas, to the structuring of a professionally written script, to the business elements needed to market one’s work. Topics include: story and plot, structure and scene construction, characters, dialogue, and insights into the industry. Emphasis will be placed on writing the type of script that Hollywood might consider commercial. Classes will consist primarily of lecture and discussion, which will cover various components of a well-written screenplay. This is not a writing workshop in the traditional sense, but students will be given an opportunity to complete a worksheet designed to help them in their initial efforts to structure their screenplay.
