NCLE 012
Poetry Workshop

Course Description: This workshop provides an overview of contemporary poetry accompanied by an intensive focus on individual poems submitted by students. It is suitable for those new to poetry, as well as for more experienced poets and enthusiasts. We’ll read assigned poems in terms of the lessons they can offer other poets; our discussions will address the rhetoric and form of successful poems so that students understand the canon and how their work approaches it. The workshop session itself, in which we’ll critique student work, has two purposes: it gives the poet the benefit of feedback from sympathetic peers and also teaches more acute and precise editorial skills. The workshop functions both to give criticism and to better formulate it; our aim is to further students’ poems in conception, creation and revision. By course end, students will have become conversant with the history and tradition of contemporary poetry: its movements, schools, and audience. They will also have had written and revised under guidance from instructor and peers with access to thorough and exact editing advice. Also covered will be the submission process for journals and book presses, professionalism, the Web and ways of finding the best outlet for the poet. Reading materials will be made available through UVA’s Instructional Toolkit. Access to the Internet is required.
