UVA SCPS Course Offerings

NCLE 015
Creative Nonfiction Workshop

Course Description: Students of the essay find themselves interested in a broad range of specialties, from opinion/analysis to feature reporting to memoir. The course is based on the idea that the writer is best served when he/she specializes as broadly as possible; the op-ed writer learns to use language to its potential from an essayist, the memoirist finds lessons in narrative from the journalist, and so on. Half of each class will be devoted to topical analysis of different sub-genres, including pure journalism and pure memoir but continuing to more rhetorical work (op-eds) and feature writing (personal profiles, topical coverage). The other half of the course will consist of a workshop session in which students critique and edit the work of their peers. Outside reading and writing assignments will be balanced with the time required to read and comment on student work. Reading materials will be made available through U.Va.’s Instructional Toolkit. Access to the Internet is required.
