Writing About Places: Travel Writing and Memoirs About Places

Course Description: This workshop will provide the tools, guidance and inspiration to launch your next travel writing venture. We will probe the art of seeing, sensing and writing about places and people both friendly and forbidding with the flair of a storyteller and a journalist’s knack for recording detail. Whether the adventure unravels alone in the wilderness or squeezed inside a crowded bus, the essential elements of travel writing will apply. These include the use of descriptive details, painting a vivid atmosphere with words, and bringing significant people, neighborhoods and communities to life. In addition to in-class and assigned writing exercises, we will read short essays from many of the world’s best travel writers.
