Course Description: How do our favorite writers inspire and instruct us through their storytelling? By discussing classic works of short fiction and excerpts from novels – and particularly by reading and responding to each others’ work – we will sharpen our abilities as readers, writers and editors. Key to our discussions about how to write a compelling story will be an examination of structure, voice, dialogue, character, point of view, and other crucial issues. The goal of the workshop will be to help you generate new stories and to effectively critique and revise this work, from first draft through finished story. Class will consist of a combination of brief lectures, writing exercises, discussion and workshopping. You should come to class with a story, or the beginning of a story, that you want to develop and revise over the course of our semester together. Class discussions and workshops will help each writer focus on his or her specific challenges. Some time at the end of the semester will be set aside to discuss the literary magazine marketplace, and the different avenues to getting stories published. Primarily, though, we will devote class time to developing your creative work in a fun, positive environment. Reading materials will be made available through U.Va.’s Instructional Toolkit. Access to the Internet is required.
