Introduction to the Stars and Galaxies

Course Description: Have you ever wondered how astronomers know what stars are made of? What will happen to the Earth when the Sun dies? What would it be like to fall into a black hole? When and where was the Big Bang and why do we believe it occurred? We’ll discover the answers to these questions and more at the McCormick Observatory, atop the University of Virginia’s scenic Observatory Hill. Through lecture, discussion, demonstrations, group exercises and use of the observatory’s telescopes, you will learn about light and spectra, the Sun (as an example of the best studied star), the stars (their birth, lives, and death), the Milky Way galaxy, other galaxies, and the Big Bang. No previous experience with astronomy is required.
