Course Description: The year 2007 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert E. Lee. His name, like few others in American history, conjures up diametrical views. This lecture series aims to explore Robert E. Lee’s life and his place in the memory of a nation. In a year of muted celebrations of Lee’s birth, we look at his life and legacy, seeking to cast a dispassionate, but searching gaze at a man who has become a legend. Topics include Lee’s military achievements and relationship with wartime civil authorities, his attitude toward slavery, his tenure as college president, and his iconic status.
