Course Description: Thomas Jefferson wrote of a wall of separation between church and state in the United States. Two hundred years later, issues such as abortion, stem cell research and prayer in school provide daily reminders that the debate over the proper relationship between politics and religion still rages. This course will survey the historical, theoretical and legal context for understanding these and other modern controversies and the prospects for their resolution. We will also focus on American domestic, social and foreign policy, the legacy of September 11, and the problems arising from increased religious pluralism. Short lectures will complement class participation and debate, using brief readings of primary documents such as court decisions and political speeches to stimulate discussion.
