NCTH 005
A Survey of Eastern Religions

Course Description: While Western religions are traditionally more familiar to Americans, the practices and philosophies of Eastern religions are becoming more common and widespread. Here in Charlottesville, for example, we have Buddhist meditation centers, a Tibetan diaspora community and a Hindu ashram. This course will provide windows into these local and world traditions. Students will encounter sacred writings, film, music and other resources to provide an introduction to the traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Shinto and eastern shamanism. Classes will combine lecture, short audio-visual presentations and plenty of critical thought and discussion.
