PHYS 635
Curriculum Enhancement I

Course Description: This is primarily a laboratory course taken concurrently with PHYS 631. It includes experiments with sensors that are integrated with graphing calculators and computers and other experiments using low cost apparatus. The laboratories utilze best teaching practices and hands-on experimentation cooperative learning groups. This course is intended for in-service teachers, particularly those desiring to be (or already are) middle school physical science or high school physics teachers. This course can be used for teachers who are seeking endorsement or certification to teach high school physics. This is a required course for the UVA Master of Art in Physics Education. The course will consist of laboratory-type hands-on activities, physics, curricula discussions, pedagogical content knowledge, and inservice activities. During the four-week summer component, teachers (students) will complete several different kinds of activities including experiments using probes with graphing calculators and computers, table-based labs, and video-based labs. Technology will be emphasized. New curricula like Modeling Active Physics will be discussed and presented. During the following fall, teachers will have an inservice presentation to complete.
