Master of Education, Mathematics
(Available regionally through cohorts)
The Master of Education with an emphasis in Mathematics provides teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to assume the role of a school-based K-8 mathematics specialist. The program offers a degree from the Curry School of Education. Courses are offered through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies’ Mathematics Outreach Office in collaboration with the Curry School and the Mathematics Department in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Participants acquire a comprehensive understanding of the sequential nature of mathematics and the mathematical structures inherent in the content strands. They increase their understanding of mathematics and how students develop a core knowledge base of concepts and processes within the discipline of mathematics, including:
- number systems and number theory
- geometry and measurement
- statistics and probability
- functions and algebra
Participants will gain the ability to use the five processes of becoming mathematical problem solvers, reasoning mathematically, communicating mathematically, making mathematical connections, and using mathematical representations — at different levels of complexity. Participants develop coaching and leadership knowledge and skills needed to provide job-embedded professional learning opportunities and to improve mathematics programs at their schools, including addressing the needs of high and low-achieving students as well as the needs of diverse learners.
Students are required to complete 33 credits (11 courses), plus a 3-credit practicum. The program takes approximately three years to complete on a part-time basis, taking two courses during the academic year and two courses during the summer. This program meets the requirements for state endorsement as a K-8 mathematics specialist.
