Master of Education, Reading Education

(Available at our Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, Richmond, Roanoke, and University Centers)

The Master of Education with an emphasis in Reading provides teachers and other educators with a firm foundation in reading education. The program is a Curry School of Education degree with courses offered throughout Virginia at our regional centers.

Participants will acquire a current and comprehensive understanding of literacy development from emergent literacy to mature reading. Courses focus on literacy acquisition, early intervention, reading comprehension, assessment, reading disability, and word knowledge. Issues related to English as a Second Language are also addressed. Supporting or cognate area courses include work in children''s or young adult literature, writing, and developmental psychology. Additionally, students can elect one course from another area of education, with advisor approval.

The program requires students to complete 36 credit hours, including 6 hours of clinical practicum courses. These latter courses must be taken in Charlottesville or at a regional center when available. The program takes approximately three years to complete on a part-time basis, taking two courses during the academic year and two courses during the summer. Several of the courses are offered online.

The program meets the requirements for state endorsement as a K-12 reading specialist.

An Education Specialist Degree in Reading Education is offered for those who already hold a master''s degree but would like to add the reading specialist endorsement.
