(Available at our Northern Virginia Center)

(This program is currently full. Please check the Curry School web site for doctoral study options in Charlottesville.)

The Doctorate Degree in Administration and Supervision is offered through the University’s Curry School of Education at the Northern Virginia Center. The Ed.D. degree is the highest professional degree in education. Candidates for this degree are recognized for their commitment to the application of knowledge on behalf of improved educational practice. The primary purpose of the Ed.D. program is to provide experienced and practicing educators with a broad and systematic understanding of professional education, a definitive knowledge of selected aspects of educational theory and practice, and an ability to apply in an informed and critical manner existing research findings to educational practice and problems.

At least 78 credits beyond a bachelor’s degree including a minimum of 12 credits of dissertation are required for this program. Students may complete all requirements at the Northern Virginia Center if 24 credits are taught by resident faculty. The total number of credits is determined individually in consultation with the student’s assigned program advisor. Students entering the doctoral program with a strong master's degree can apply up to 24 hours of credit to their doctoral program, provided that the program area judges that the courses are sufficiently comparable to substitute for courses offered in the doctoral program. Other requirements include comprehensive exams, dissertation and oral defense.
