New Teacher Institute-Reading

TEMPO Reading Outreach is offering a New Teacher Institute on a contract basis to school divisions in Virginia.  Contracts will be offered for 20 participants.

The noncredit workshop is designed for new teachers of all grade levels who teach reading. During this four-day institute, teachers will learn the basics of literacy instruction that all language arts teachers in the state of Virginia are expected to know. Topics include:
  •       an overview of literacy development
  •       using assessment to guide instruction
  •       phonemic awareness and phonics
  •       word study instruction
  •       strategies to build vocabulary and comprehension
  •       connecting writing to the literacy curriculum.
Many hands-on learning activities take place throughout the four days.

This institute can also be specifically targeted to middle school teachers.
