PreK-6 Licensure Program

(Available at our Roanoke Center)

The PreK-6 Licensure Program consists of a sequence of courses designed to enable participants to obtain a Collegiate Professional License as elementary education classroom teachers PreK-6. Upon successful completion of the course sequence, candidates will be eligible for licensure and employment as a PreK-6 classroom teacher in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The U.Va. Curry School of Education will recommend all participants who complete the program for licensure. Upon successful completion of the required PRAXIS II Elementary Content Knowledge examination, the Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA), the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) and any other state requirements, those successfully completing this nondegree program will be eligible for the Five-Year Renewable Collegiate Professional License with endorsement as a PreK-6 classroom teacher.

This part-time professional development program is designed for the working adult with a bachelor’s degree and takes approximately 17 months to complete. Classes are held evenings and/or Saturdays. Usually the course of study runs four semesters. Courses are held at the U.Va. Roanoke Center. Participants may choose to student teach in a district near their home. Student teaching placements are shorter than in traditional programs and each placement is individually coordinated to accommodate the student’s needs.
