EDHS 589W: Including Children with Disabilities in General Physical Education
The purpose of this online graduate class is to prepare physical education teachers in Virginia to provide safe, appropriate, and individualized accommodations to children with disabilities who are included in general physical education programs. The course is divided into the following four modules: (1) introduction to inclusion, (2) planning and assessment, (3) instructional, curricular, game, and behavioral accommodations, and (4) safety and social considerations with inclusion in physical education. All information presented is based on scientifically-proven practices in adapted physical education that have been successfully implemented in physical education programs in Virginia and around the United States. This web-based course includes lecture notes, supplemental readings, and video clips.

PSED 624A: Teaching with Web 2.0 Technology in the 21st Century
Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, podcasts, and other collaborative tools provide new opportunities for in-service teachers with beyond basic computer knowledge to integrate technology into teaching and learning. The internet is a more customizable and user-friendly classroom utility than ever before. This cutting-edge class offers teachers an in-depth look into incorporating numerous 21st-century tools into classrooms in an effort to engage digital learners. PHYS 252W: Introductory Physics IV/Quantum Physics (Modern Physics)
Physics 252 is a comprehensive study of modern physics that emphasizes concepts and problem solving. We are offering this distance learning course so you can take it from anywhere in the world where you have an Internet connection and a computer. This particular course offering is particularly appropriate for engineering students who have completed PHYS 142E and 241E and can be taken by science majors (including physics majors) who have taken various physics sequences: 231-2, or 151-2 and 251, or possibly 201-2 (with instructor permission). This course serves as a science/technical elective for engineering students.

PHYS 633W: Classical & Modern Physics III (Modern Physics)
Instructor permission is required to take this course to make sure all teachers are adequately prepared. An undergraduate degree is required. Normally PHYS 631 and 632 have already been taken. If not, then two semesters of calculus-based introductory physics including mechanics, heat and thermodynamics, fluids, electricity, magnetism, and optics should already be completed. Contact Professor Thornton by e-mail to obtain permission. You might include a brief summary of physics courses taken and teaching experience to save time.
A comprehensive study of modern physics using some calculus and emphasizing concepts and problem solving. This course is intended for in-service teachers, particularly those desiring to be (or already are) high school physics teachers. This course can be used for teachers who are seeking endorsement or certification to teach high school physics. This is a required course for the UVa Masters of Art in Physics Education.

PSED 611D: Literature for Young Adults
This course focuses on the study of literature for adolescents with an emphasis on criteria for selecting and interpreting quality material for youth at different developmental and reading levels. In addition, it encourages recognizing and addressing adolescent responses to literature as well as using a variety of approaches including technology to engage youth in the reading process.
