Our Students
The School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) is committed to bringing the outstanding academic resources of the University of Virginia to adult learners. By providing interesting, innovative and unique educational opportunities, SCPS reaches nearly 15,000 nontraditional students annually. With academic centers located in
Charlottesville, Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, Quantico, Richmond, Roanoke, and Southwest Virginia, the School meets the educational needs of the Commonwealth’s citizens. Nontraditional learners throughout the U.S. and the world participate in the University’s academic community through the School’s state-of-the-art distance learning technology
Students enrolled in SCPS courses and programs are nontraditional learners interested in furthering their education. There is no “typical” SCPS student. They range in age from the early 20s to the late 80s. They are just as likely to be working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree as to be enrolled in a course for personal enrichment or professional development. Many of our students are working
professionals, balancing the demands of family, work and school. Other students are nearing the end of their careers or are retired, and are interested in third-age learning through personal enrichment courses and
travel programs.
