Secondary Mathematics

  • Project Director Loren Pitt and SCPS, in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics are offering an M.A degree in mathematics in Abingdon to 31 Southwest Virginia educators. Prerequisites include an undergraduate degree in mathematics and an endorsement in secondary mathematics.  The cohort finished in summer 2007. Individual courses developed for this program can now be offered as needed across the state for recertification.

  • A Partnership Project: Building Innovative Distance Learning Mathematics Courses for High School Teachers is a VADOE MSP Title II Part B grant of $185,000 awarded in 2006 to PI Loren Pitt. This grant supports development of several courses to assist with delivery of the M.A. degree in southwest Virginia and to provide advanced coursework to mathematics teachers in the Roanoke area.  The courses will be useful for providing the 18 credits of mathematics graduate content beyond a master’s degree that are required for secondary teachers to teach in dual enrollment programs.
