Who We Are In the fall of 2006, the Office of Mathematics Outreach was created within the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) to ensure the long-term viability of mathematics outreach efforts. Graduate courses for in-service teachers are offered in collaboration with the Curry School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics. Ongoing partnerships with school divisions provide sustained and comprehensive mathematics education programs for in-service teachers throughout the Commonwealth. Mathematics outreach efforts began in the late 1980s when SCPS began collaborating with Dr. Loren Pitt, a U.Va. mathematics professor and director of the Center for Liberal Arts Mathematics Project, to offer professional learning opportunities for in-service teachers.
The Office of Mathematics Outreach seeks grant opportunities to support professional learning opportunities for K-16 in-service teachers in mathematics education. In addition, the office fosters opportunities that continue building and strengthening partnerships with school divisions, Institutes of Higher Education, the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition to improve mathematics teaching and learning. Requests from Virginia school divisions and the changes in teacher licensure regulations guide the Office’s outreach efforts.
