Introduction to Screenwriting Spring 2005 personal enrichment courses in Charlottesville have ended. Fall 2005 courses will be posted soon. Registration will begin on Monday, August 15. This course will provide the fundamentals needed to write a commercial screenplay from identifying marketable story ideas, to the structuring of a professionally written script, to the business elements needed to market one’s work. Topics include: story and plot, structure and scene construction, characters, dialogue, and insights into the industry. Emphasis will be placed on writing the type of script that Hollywood might consider commercial. Classes will consist primarily of lecture and discussion, which will cover various components of a well-written screenplay. This is not a writing workshop in the traditional sense, but students will be given an opportunity to complete a worksheet designed to help them in their initial efforts to structure their screenplay. Instructor: Michael Cordell has a degree in film studies and has been writing screenplays for over fifteen years. He has sold three screenplays to Hollywood studios, including one that was produced starring Harvey Keitel. Mr. Cordell has also optioned several other screenplays, and is represented by United Talent Agency in Los Angeles. He is on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Screenwriter’s Forum, a nonprofit group comprised of screenwriters from Virginia and Washington D.C.
