FAQ - Federal Acquisition

As of May 1, 2018, we will no longer be accepting applications for the Certificate in Federal Acquisition.

How many courses per semester may I take?

We do not have any limits on the number of courses that a student may take each semester.  However, we recommend students with full-time work schedules take no more than two courses per semester.

Is there any particular course sequence I should follow?
For students new to the federal contracting environment or with limited experience, it is suggested they start with FAC 3010 Federal Regulations I or FAC 3030 Federal Cost & Price Analysis I.

The program can be completed in 12 months by enrolling in 2 courses per term. The annual course schedule may help in planning your coursework.

Are all of the courses in the undergraduate Certificate in Federal Acquisition offered online?

Can I enroll in just a few courses? I’m not interested in applying to and earning the certificate.

Can I take courses before applying for admission to the program?
Individuals must apply to and be offered admission to earn a certificate. A maximum of two courses that will count towards satisfying the requirements for the certificate may be taken at SCPS prior to admission.

I am interested in becoming a contracting officer at the federal government.  Will this certificate program help me?
Courses in the Certificate in Federal Acquisition address the current FAI (FAC-C) and DAU (DAWIA) Level 1 learning objectives. Both DAU and FAI require additional courses for which there is no UVA equivalency. Upon completion of the certificate program and additional DAU/FAI required courses, the student will have met the requirement for Level 1 certification.

Will you accept transfer credits, such as courses completed at DAU?
Generally, we do not accept transfer credit for certificate programs. On a by exception basis, we will consider accepting up to one comparable course taken by students in either FAI or DAU Federal Acquisition Certification program. Please contact Program Administrator Cindy Lu to discuss.

By completing this program, will I earn a certificate?
Students who successfully complete the undergraduate Certificate in Federal Acquisition will be awarded a certificate of completion from the University of Virginia's School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS). The credential is also recorded on a UVA transcript.

What grades must I earn to be awarded the certificate?
Students must earn a C or better in all courses required for the certificate to be awarded. Should a grade fall below a C, the student has the option of retaking the course in order to complete the requirements and be awarded the certificate.

Does this program lead to a degree program?
The undergraduate Certificate in Federal Acquisition is designed to be a stand-alone certificate program.  Students interested in pursuing a degree program are encouraged to contact their intended higher education institution for transfer credit acceptance.

Will credits from this certificate program transfer to another college or university?
Certificate programs are designed to be stand-alone programs.  Selected courses, however, may be eligible for transfer.  Colleges and universities may recognize these courses for transfer, but decisions are made independently by the receiving institution.
