When you enroll in a course at SCPS, you never know where it’s going to lead.

Erin Crum had a new baby, a new camera, and an interest in combining the two by taking better pictures. After completing an introductory course in photography, she signed up for John Hulburt’s  “Intermediate Digital Photography” course through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

As Crum found out, when you enroll in a course at SCPS, you never know where it’s going to lead. Today, she is taking photographs professionally in Seattle, specializing in newborns and families. “It was John’s course that ignited my passion for photography,” she says. “It was a critical step in getting me to where I am now.”

Crum credits the instructor's thoughtful approach to the class for the impact the class had on her. Whether it was portrait photography or shooting in low light, she appreciated Hulburt’s in-depth analysis. “There is nothing superficial about the way John presented the subject matter,” she says.  “It really set the tone for the class.”  Field trips to an orchid grower’s to practice macro-photography and portrait sessions in the Dome Room of UVA’s Rotunda gave students the opportunity to immediately apply what they learned.

Crum also appreciated Hulburt’s investment in individual students and his focus on helping each one become a better photographer.  “From day one, John took the time to really look at our photographs and give us detailed feedback,” she says. “He was constantly encouraging us to think about the different techniques and perspectives we could use to take a specific picture.”

Convinced that everyone in the class was more experienced than she was, Crum threw her heart and soul into becoming a better photographer. Thanks to Hulburt’s encouragement and guidance, she’s reached the point where people gladly pay her for her efforts.
