Bachelor of Professional Studies in Health Sciences Management Pathway Guide

Transfer Admission Requirements (36-60 credits required; at least 60 credits earned at UVA)

There are two admissions pathways to the UVA Bachelor of Professional Studies in Health Sciences Management (BPHM) degree. For both, only courses in which a 2.0/C or better was earned are eligible for transfer credit. Transfer credits for qualifying scores on AP, IB, CLEP tests are awarded in accordance with UVA policies outlined in the University’s Undergraduate Record. The BPHM degree requires a minimum of 120 credits, at least 60 of which must be earned at UVA.

Admission Pathway 1

Admission Pathway 1 is designed for those who hold an associate of applied science degree in one of the following fields: emergency medical services, health information management, medical laboratory technology, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapy assistant, radiography, respiratory therapy, and sonography. This path requires 60 transferable semester credits and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in the applicable associate degree. Transferable credits at admission must satisfy the general education and allied health admission requirements as indicated below. 

English Composition (6 credit hours generally required: full sequence at previous college) 
ENG 111 & ENG 112 in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) satisfy this requirement. Students who have placed out of one or either of these courses in VCCS should consult with pre-admission advising directly.

Humanities (minimum 3 credit hours required) 
Transferable courses from art, art history, architectural history, classics, drama, literature, music appreciation/theory, political theory, religion, and western or other civilization history courses may be eligible (e.g., HIS 101,102,111,112 in VCCS).

Social Sciences (minimum 3 credit hours required)
Transferable courses from anthropology/geography, economics, government/politics, history (non-civilization courses), psychology, and sociology may be eligible. 

Math and/or Natural Science (minimum 11 credit hours required in math, science, or combination) 
Transferable courses in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Science, Physics, and Natural Science. Physical Geography (GEO 200 in VCCS) is also acceptable. Acceptable math courses in VCCS include but are not limited to: MTH 154; MTH 155 or 245; MTH 246; MTH 261 or 263; MTH 262 or 264; MTH 265; MTH 266; MTH 267. College Algebra & Pre-calc do not transfer. 

Allied Health/Technical Requirements (37 credits required) 
Courses in subject field (emergency medical services, health information management, medical laboratory technology, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapy assistant, radiography, respiratory therapy, and sonography) required for (or electives in) the Associate of Applied Science degree. Many, but not all, courses will transfer; consult with a BPHM pre-admissions advisor before applying.  

Admission Pathway 2

Admission Pathway 2 is open to those without an associate of applied science. This path requires 36-60 transferable credits. Students must satisfy the English composition requirement (ex. ENG 111 & 112 in VCCS) and have at least 12 credits applicable toward the core general education requirements for the BPHM degree.
