Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Pathway Guide

Transfer Requirements for Admission (36-60 transfer credits required; at least 60 earned at UVA)

36-60 transferable semester credits and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 are baseline requirements to be eligible for consideration for the UVA Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) program. Applicants must present course work that satisfies the English composition requirement and have at least 12 credits applicable toward the core general education requirements for the BIS degree, as indicated below. A minimum of 120 credits are required for the UVA BIS degree, at least 60 of which must be earned at UVA. Only courses in which a 2.0/C or better was earned are eligible for transfer credit. 

English Composition (full sequence at previous college) 
ENG 111 & ENG 112 in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) satisfy this requirement. Students who have placed out of one or either of these courses in VCCS should consult with BIS pre-admission advising directly.

Humanities 
Transferable courses from art, art history, architectural history, classics, drama, literature, music appreciation/theory, political theory, religion, and western or other civilization history courses (e.g., HIS 101,102,111,112 in VCCS). No more than 8 hours of music performance will transfer, and these do not satisfy core requirements.

Social Sciences 
Transferable courses from anthropology/geography, economics, government/politics, history (non-civilization courses), psychology, and sociology. 

Math and/or Natural Science 
Science courses in VCCS that satisfy this requirement include, but are not limited to, BIO 101 OR 106, 102, 107; CHM 101; PHY 101, 102; GOL 105, 106, 110, 111, 135; ENV 121, 122; NAS 125, 131, 132; GEO 200.  Acceptable math courses in VCCS include but are not limited to: MTH 154; MTH 155 or 245; MTH 246; MTH 261 or 263; MTH 262 or 264; MTH 265; MTH 266; MTH 267. College Algebra & Pre-calc do not transfer.

Additional Liberal Arts Core Electives 
Additional courses from disciplines used to satisfy core area requirements in Humanities, Social Science, or Math/Natural Science as noted above.

Additional Transfer Credits 
Transferable credits that do not count toward an area in the general education core. May include: public speaking; foreign language courses; maximum 2 credits of PE; maximum 12 credits military science course work; maximum 12 credits from Defense Language Institute; maximum 8 credits of applied music/performance; ACC 211 & ACC 212 in VCCS; computing applications course (eg, ITE 115 or 119 in VCCS); 10-year age limit on acceptable IT/computer science courses. Select business (BUS) courses may transfer for admission, depending upon intended concentration.
