Matt Johnson

Assistant Director, Economic Development, City of Charlottesville, VA

Matt Johnson has been Assistant Director for the City of Charlottesville Office of Economic Development since October 2023. In this role he primarily focuses upon developing and cultivating relationships with members of Charlottesville’s existing business community, leading economic development communications and messaging efforts for the Office of Economic Development and assisting with other EDA and OED initiatives as needed. 

Prior to arriving in Charlottesville, Matt served as Deputy Director for the York County Department of Economic & Tourism Development. His experience also includes time as Economic Development Manager in the City of Newport News Department of Development, where he was in charge of Project & CIP Coordination. In total he worked with the City of Newport News for over 15 years. During that time, he also served as a Senior Project Coordinator and Business Retention Coordinator, and he held several purchasing positions. Matt has held positions in the non-profit sector working for Peninsula Council for Workforce Development as their Senior Manager for Workforce Development and as Associate Campaign Director for United Way of the Virginia Peninsula. 

Matt is a graduate of Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Originally from Roanoke, Virginia, Matt lived on the Virginia Peninsula for 27 years before relocating to Charlottesville. He and his wife are the proud parents of two daughters.
