Craft, Conservation and Contemporary Practice in the Veneto

The University of Virginia’s course NCAR 200: Craft, Conservation and Contemporary Practice in the Veneto offers an in-person experiential learning opportunity to explore architecture in the Veneto in Italy. The international program is designed for architects and individuals who are eager to learn more about the history, materials, craft skills and conservation methods of architecture in Italy.   

Offered through a partnership with the UVA School of Architecture, the program empowers individuals to enhance their understanding of the history, materials, artisan techniques and timeless legacy of Italian architecture and design. Rooted in experiential and immersive learning, this program includes tours of historic sites, class sessions led by UVA School of Architecture faculty, guest speakers local to the region, and interactive workshops on topics like history and conservation science, heritage materials in contemporary practice and urban regeneration.

About the Program 

Structure 

• The in-person program consists of 4 full days of learning and community in Vicenza, Venice and Verona, Italy and surrounding areas. 
• The program features immersive learning experiences, and participants will be walking between shorter sites (at times between 1-2 miles). Transportation will be provided (bus and/or train) for longer distances. 
• Access to digital course materials will be available beginning September 14.

Tuition & Fees 

The program cost is $5995 plus a $12 learning fee  

• The cost includes all course materials, learning activities, and the meals listed in the schedule above (lunch on October 21, lunch on October 23, dinner on October 24). 
• The program cost includes international emergency assistance insurance for the dates of the academic program through CISI. It does not include travel insurance, and we recommend that participants purchase separate travel insurance and supplemental health insurance. 
• The cost does not include travel, lodging, or meals beyond what is listed above.  
• Please work with your employer to determine whether your tuition is eligible for education benefits.

Do I need to be a UVA alum in order to participate?

No! You do not need to be a UVA alum in order to participate in the program. 

Can you provide more information on making travel arrangements and recommendations?

Students are responsible for arriving in Vicenza ahead of the program start date.  

• Venice Marco Polo International Airport (VCE) is the closest airport to Vicenza  
• Arrive by October 20 to be prepared for an early start on October 21
• Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the travel dates
• The cost of airfare is at your expense, and any refunds are strictly per the terms of carriage you accept with the airline at time of booking. UVA is not responsible for cancelled or delayed flights. We recommend booking travel insurance.

Can you provide more information on accommodation options?

You can select the hotel of your choice. There are several hotels near the Valmarana Center. Please contact us for recommendations at ValmaranaCenterUVA@virginia.edu.

Staying at the Valmarana Center: You may choose to stay at the Valmarana Center. There are limited double occupancy rooms (with shared restrooms and showers) available as well as full apartments. If you are interested, please mark this interest on the registration form. 

What are packing recommendations?

Clothing: Pack layers suitable for the variable fall weather in Italy (raincoat, comfortable walking shoes, and clothing for outdoor activities). Generally, temperatures fluctuate between 50°F to 65°F. Please bring business casual attire for the welcome dinner. 

Documentation: Carry a photocopy of your passport. It is also advisable to have an electronic copy saved on your phone. 

Personal Items: Bring toiletries, medications, and any necessary electronics (note: Italy most often uses Type C plugs; bring an adapter).

Some meals (two lunches and one dinner) will be provided as part of the program. Participants should communicate any dietary restrictions or allergies in advance through the registration form or to the Professional and Enrichment Programs team at scps-pep@virginia.edu, to ensure accommodations are made. 

Please bring any snacks and/or water during long excursions. 

How can I communicate my dietary restrictions?

Can you provide more information on communicating while abroad?

Contact Information: Program leaders (Bill Sherman and Alexa Jeffress) will provide a list of emergency contacts, including their cell phones, and the U.S. Embassy in Milan.  

Cell Phones: If desired, verify that your phone plan supports international roaming. Alternatively, consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival in Italy. Contact your provider to verify if they can enable a “Daily Travel Pass.”  This pass generally costs $12 per day and allows existing service to work without interruption.

Can you provide more information on health and safety?

Insurance: CISI International Health & Emergency Assistance insurance is required as a part of the UVA delegation. UVA will secure CISI insurance as a part of your course registration. You may consider supplemental/private insurance as well. 

Health Precautions: Students should consult their physician regarding vaccinations or medications. Bring any necessary prescriptions in original packaging. Please see CDC guidance on vaccination recommendations.

How much does it cost to participate in the program?

The program tuition of $5995 covers all costs of programming and some meals while on site in Italy during the program. This includes class sessions, entrance fees, local transportation to and from learning activities, and guided tours. There is an addition off-Grounds fee of $12. 

The program tuition does not include airfare, hotel, additional meals or additional travel, and other personal expenses. 

Participants may choose to budget for souvenirs, additional snacks, and personal expenses. Currency exchange to the euro can be done at the airport or local banks, but major credit cards (e.g., Visa/Mastercard) are accepted widely. 

How will I learn more details about the program if I choose to register?

We will hold a mandatory pre-departure orientation session virtually to review the itinerary, cultural expectations, and travel safety tips. Attendance is mandatory and this coincides with a live session of the course. The date of this meeting is Monday, September 14, 12-1:30 pm.
